Kohan Garden’s 25th Anniversary

Drum 100 (7)

THE KOHAN GARDEN IS 25 YEARS OLD!

To thank the community and funders for your dedicated support of the arts and the Kohan Garden and to acknowledge a valuable contribution to our cultural heritage, the Slocan Lake Gallery and Slocan Lake Garden Societies are co-hosting a day of celebration on Sunday, 26 July. It will take place in our beautiful Japanese garden, New Denver, from 10 am to 5 pm.

“The Garden as Inspiration for Arts” will be a fun day for all, culminating in a spectacular performance by the Yamabiko Taiko drummers of Kelowna. Enjoy demonstrations of traditional Japanese art forms including ikebana flower arranging, adult and kids’ origami lessons and an enchanting Japanese tea ceremony where you can taste Yokan. View the work of many regional artists who will be displaying their skills in various garden settings and see a variety of garden sculpture. Listen to local musicians and poets and enjoy mesmerizing Eagle and Tiger Dances. At the concession savour gustatory delights provided by pastry chef Robin McNabb.

Participate in activities such as Children’s Fun Art ($2), a Kohan Garden Exploration Game (with prizes) and garden tours focusing on the Kohan’s history, plants, bugs and birds.
Learn new skills in two adult workshops: Watercolour Painting (2 sessions, 10 participants each) will be facilitated by Donna Hicks, experienced art teacher and Macro Photography (5 participants) by Sara Rainford, professional photographer. Registration fees are $7 for painting and $10 for photography. Register early to: Barb Yeomans:yeomansb@netidea.com or 358-7765.

While in town see the Nikkei Centre’s Obon Ceremony and visit the antiques sale on Main Street, New Denver. The day promises to be one of adventure and fun for all the family. Please invite your friends and plan to join us in celebration of the 25th anniversary of our lovely lakeside community garden, a cherished asset for all. Entry by donation.

Pick up a flyer with details of the day’s program at local outlets from mid July or visit www.silvertongallery.ca and www.newdenver.ca.

We appreciate support from: Villages of New Denver and Silverton, Columbia Basin Trust/Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance, BC Arts Council, Kootenay Savings Community Foundation and Slocan Lake Rec. Commission #6
